Structure Your Screenplay To Sell

Two-day workshop Sep 22 & 29

You’re a screenwriter but nobody wants to make your films. You don’t realise it but there is one reason only: the Draft One Trap. You go on a crusade for recognition, for people to tell you how talented you are and how successful you will be. To appease your conscience, you will make minor scene level tweaks. You will call it draft two, three, thirteen. The reality is that it is still draft one.

Story consultant and producer Karel Segers teaches you how to turn your screenplay or movie idea into a story that sells. He talks passionately about structure, process, selling and some powerful ‘three-act-truths’ during this intensive two-day course.

COURSE DETAIL | Successful feature screenwriters don’t cherish that first draft. They won’t show it, let alone shop it around except for advice on how to move to the next draft. They listen to the painful feedback from industry professionals and follow a process on the way to a wonderful, radically different Draft Two. This course guarantees you will not unknowingly fall into that Draft One Trap again by helping you build a process for the Real Draft Two.

DAY ONE | Learn how to assess your work with the eyes of a professional, using the much touted but rarely understood ‘three act structure’ on every level of the screenplay.

DAY TWO | Focus on the rewriting process and the preparation of a strong submission document for producers and funding agencies.

TUTOR | Karel Segers, a Licentiate of Germanic Philology (University of Louvain, Belgium) was the Head of Production and Programming at the Digital Broadcasting Company in London (Sky, UK), before which he was a buyer and on-screen TV host for Europe’s Canal Plus. He served as a movie show host for MTV Europe, a producer for market leader Radio 2 Belgium and a consultant to the Flanders International Film Festival. Karel has produced two short dramas and co-produced a documentary and a feature film. He is in development with a feature film and in production with a short 3D CGI animation. Over the past few years Karel has acted as a story analyst, consulting to writers, directors and producers on films in development as well as post-production. His views are published in The Story Dept. as well as ‘Karel’s Feedback Forum’ on the AWG web site. Both of the nominees for the AWG Monte Miller Award 2007 are Karel’s clients.
